These clients wanted to create authenticity while adding their personal touch to a home that had good bones but no real personality. A true addition by subtraction – this renovation started with a dated traditional home that was in desperate need of a more restrained design. Heavy columns and trim were eliminated or replaced with more appropriate proportions. The exterior brick was replaced with a reclaimed one and the asphalt shingle roof was replaced with a Spanish slate. The kitchen and primary suite was gutted and an unnecessary second stair was removed open up the relationship between the kitchen and dining room. The wife, an antiques collector, brought an eclectic, old world feel to the home with many items from her personal collection.
